🌍 Class 6 Geography Chapter 1: The Earth in the Solar System – Notes & Summary

📘 Introduction

Our Earth is a small part of a vast universe filled with stars, planets, moons, and other celestial bodies. In this chapter, we explore the components of the Solar System and understand the uniqueness of our planet Earth.

🌌 What is the Universe?

The universe is an endless space that contains millions of galaxies, stars, and planets. It is continuously expanding and believed to have originated from a massive explosion called the Big Bang.

🌟 What are Stars?

Stars are massive balls of hot gases that emit their own light and heat. They appear to twinkle in the night sky. The Sun is the nearest star to Earth.

🪐 What are Planets?

Planets are celestial bodies that revolve around a star and do not emit their own light. There are eight planets in our Solar System: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.

🌍 Earth – The Unique Planet

Earth is the only planet known to support life. It has water, oxygen-rich air, and suitable temperatures. Around 71% of Earth’s surface is covered with water. It has one natural satellite – the Moon.

🌙 What are Satellites?

Satellites are celestial bodies that revolve around planets. There are two types:

  • Natural Satellites: Like the Moon
  • Artificial Satellites: Like INSAT and GSAT used for communication and weather forecasting

✨ What are Constellations?

Constellations are groups of stars forming recognizable shapes or patterns. An example is the Big Dipper (Saptarishi).

🌞 The Solar System

The Solar System includes the Sun at the center, eight planets, moons, asteroids, and comets. The Sun provides energy and heat to the entire system.
